Explanation

Valluvar puts the idea of the previous verse as two questions. If the wife has excellence, what will that home lack? If she lacks it, what is the use of anything it has? The questions themselves are the answer of this verse.

'Illadhen' is usually read as 'what is lacking'. 'Illaval' means the wife, the one who holds the home.

Here 'illaval' means the lady of the house. A home is not a building; it is the shadow of the heart of the one who tends it. Through her even a home of small means shines with fullness, and a home of great wealth turns empty without her.

In a home where a partner of good character lives, there is a certain dignity even in poverty. A home with love and trust, however little it holds in the hand, passes through want easily. A home with goods but without trust cannot enjoy anything.

So the true wealth of household life lies in the quality of relationship. The trust that prevails in the home guards for longer than a bank account.

Those who understand this look not at wealth alone when marrying but also at character. And wife and husband alike have to learn that character from each other.

A story

Damayanti Who Stood by in the Forest

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells the story of Nala and Damayanti. Nala, king of Nishadha, was excellent in virtues. Damayanti, princess of Vidarbha, passed over even the gods and chose Nala at her swayamvara. A son, Indrasena, and a daughter, Indrasena, were born to them.

When Kali took hold of Nala he gambled, and lost his kingdom and all his wealth to his brother Pushkara. Damayanti sent the children to her father's house with a trusted charioteer, and went into the forest with Nala in a single cloth. She did not abandon the king who had lost his realm.

In the forest hunger and wandering unsettled Nala's mind. Under the influence of Kali he wrongly thought it would be better for her if he left, and as she slept he tore away half of her garment and went away. Damayanti woke, found her husband gone, and wandered crying out for him. The Mahabharata says she was saved from the wild beasts and dangers of the forest by the strength of her virtue.

Later she took shelter with the queen of Chedi and at last reached her father's house. She sent out messengers to look for Nala. She came to know that he was living in disguise as the charioteer of King Rituparna of Ayodhya. By her steadfast love she brought him back and recognised him.

During the time of their separation both had lost everything. Yet Damayanti's steady love gave Nala the strength to win back the lost kingdom. Nala regained his land and wealth.

Even when the kingdom was lost Damayanti was with Nala, so the story shows that nothing was truly lacking to them. Where there is a good wife, a home can stay alive even after everything has been lost.
