Explanation

This verse names two qualities of a good wife. One is to possess the virtues suited to a household. The other is to run life in keeping with her husband's income. One who has both, says Valluvar, is the true helpmate of life.

For 'manaith-takka maanbu', Parimelazhagar takes it as the virtues proper to household life, chastity and the like. Love, patience, cleanliness and hospitality may be added to it. For 'valath-thakkaal', the common explanation is one who spends in keeping with her husband's means. Some others read it as one who nurtures and increases the household's wealth. Both readings stress care of the household economy.

The word 'thunai', companion, appears again here. The wife is not subordinate to the husband; she carries an equal share on life's journey. To run the home within a small income, and not to be drowned in show when the income is large, is a great skill. A home without that skill stays in want however much income comes in.

A woman who knows what her husband earns, and plans the hearth, the ornaments and the festivals accordingly, keeps the home free from debt. Peace of mind and virtue stay in a home without debt. So this is not a small matter; it protects the honour of the whole family.

The verse need not be read as a rule laid down for wives alone. In today's families both work and both spend. The lesson of 'living by one's means' applies to both. Talking over the household's income and expense with an open mind is the companionship of our time.

A story

The Wife of Kuchela

The tenth book of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of a brahmin named Sudama, known in the Tamil tradition as Kuchela. He had studied with Krishna in the gurukula of the sage Sandipani. Later Krishna became king of Dwaraka, while Kuchela lived in great poverty. Yet his heart was free of desire and attached to God alone.

Kuchela's wife shared that poverty with her husband. Hunger thinned her body, and food was rare in the house. Still she did not mock her husband's small earnings; she ran the household with what there was. One day, when the children too were weak with hunger, she said softly, "You say your friend is the king of Dwaraka. You have also said he is a refuge for brahmins. Go and see him. Even if you do not ask, he will understand your state."

Kuchela hesitated. How could he go to see a friend with empty hands? His wife went to the neighbouring houses, begged four handfuls of flattened rice, tied it in a torn cloth and gave it to him. That was the gift for his friend.

Kuchela reached Dwaraka. Krishna rose from his royal couch, ran to embrace his friend, washed his feet himself, and Queen Rukmini fanned him with a whisk. The two spoke happily of the old gurukula days. Then Krishna asked, "What have you brought me?" He opened Kuchela's bundle and ate a handful of the rice with love. As he took a second handful, Rukmini held his hand and stopped him.

Kuchela asked nothing for himself. Shame kept his lips closed. He set out for home with a full heart. On the way he saw a beautiful mansion standing where his hut had been. His wife came out to meet him adorned with jewels. Both bowed in thought of the Lord's grace.

To reflect on

Does our household live within its means, and do we talk about it openly?
