Explanation

The last verse of the chapter on household life closes with a great assurance: one who lives in the world as he ought to live will be placed among the gods. 'Vaazhvaangu vaazhdhal' is one of the most beautiful phrases in Tamil. To live is not only to be alive; it means living in the way one ought to live.

'Vaiyaththul' is important here: in this world, right here, in this very life. One need not wait to reach the heavens to gain a godlike nature; it can be reached on this earth by living rightly. Such a person, while still living, is regarded as one 'among the gods who dwell in the sky'.

Commentators give two senses. Some say that after death he reaches the status of a god. Some say that people of the world will honour him as a god. The second reading gives more encouragement to human life. We honour a good mother, a good teacher and a good doctor as godlike, which is its everyday sense.

'Vaazhvaangu' refers to living with virtue, love, generosity, impartiality and humility together. That all these are possible in household life is the message the whole chapter stresses.

What is raised to godhood here is not a renunciant but a householder. This is the summit of Valluvar's humane faith. He grants godlike status not only to the pure sage but to every honest head of a family.

The verse asks whether each of us, every day, is trying to live as one ought to live. That striving itself makes life meaningful.

A story

The Star Arundhati and the Newly-Weds

From the tradition of the Hindu marriage rite and the Puranas. In Tamil and Indian weddings there is a lovely rite. After the marriage the newly-weds are taken outside and shown a small star in the sky. Its name is Arundhati. The bridegroom shows the bride that star. This is the Arundhati darshana.

Behind the rite is a Purana. The sage Vasishtha and his wife Arundhati are honoured as the ideal couple of household life. Vasishtha was lofty in austerity, one of the Seven Sages. Arundhati was outstanding in chastity and love. Their life was simple but always a guide to others.

The Puranas say the couple conducted household life in the finest manner. Vasishtha fed those who came to the hermitage, taught learning and gave counsel to kings. Arundhati stood by him and filled the home and hermitage with love. Because of this pure household life, tradition says, they remain as stars in the sky.

In the Saptarishi constellation, near the star of Vasishtha, the tiny star Arundhati shines. They say the two stars seem to circle one another. We see in them the sign of a couple always together.

When the new couple look at that star, they resolve in their hearts, "We too should run our household life by the path of virtue like them." It is a lovely way to set a goal at the very beginning of married life.

Like the image in Valluvar's words, 'one who lives in the world as he ought to live will be placed among the gods who dwell in heaven', the couple who lived a proper household life are remembered as stars in the sky. This is the honour the world gives to those who have lived as they ought to live.

To reflect on

If someone looked at your household from outside, what would they say you are trying to live up to?
