Explanation

Here Valluvar praises household life as 'aran enappattadhe': what is called virtue is household life itself. It is a somewhat surprising claim. Some take renunciation, austerity and worship as virtue; but Valluvar holds firmly that fulfilling duty in the everyday relationships of life is virtue. Hospitality, caring for parents, raising children and helping neighbours all lie within household life.

The second part, 'ahdhum piran pazhippadhillaayin nandru', is a condition. Household life is virtue, but it must be free of faults others would blame. If one harms others in the name of family, it is not virtue. To ruin another family to make our own family prosper is not household life.

'Piran pazhippadhu' has two senses: others finding fault in the way a family conducts itself, and faults which wise elders would condemn. The first is a social view; the second is a moral view. In both, the life without fault is good.

Some commentators read 'nandru' with a modest tone, 'it is fine'. That is, household life is virtue, but it brings good only if it is blameless. There is also a caution that running a household is not easy.

In today's world many wrongs are justified with the words 'I did it for the family'. Taking bribes, lying and betraying others are excused in the name of family welfare. This verse is a gentle but firm warning against such justifications.

So working for one's family is virtue, but the way of that work must be clean. Household life is complete only when the two come together.

A story

Vidura's Banana Peels

From the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana. When Krishna went as an envoy for the Pandavas, Duryodhana had arranged a grand feast in the court of Hastinapura. Dishes of the six tastes, golden plates and silver bowls were ready. "Krishna, please dine," said Duryodhana.

Krishna refused. "The food of your house is not offered with love but with an evil intention. I will not accept it," he said, and went straight to Vidura's house. Vidura was a minister of the court but lived a simple life, residing with his wife Sulabha in a hut-like house.

On hearing that Krishna was coming, Vidura and his wife were drowned in joy. They had no means to give a feast fit for kings. All they had were a few bananas. Vidura's wife peeled the fruit and fed Krishna. In the ecstasy of her love, tradition says, she threw the fruit away and gave Krishna the peel.

Krishna ate the peel with a smile. "This is nectar to me," he said. Vidura watched in astonishment. Then, realising the mistake, he stopped his wife and made her feed the fruit. Krishna said, "I want food given with love, not wealth."

Vidura's house was simple. But he always spoke the truth, gave counsel boldly to Duryodhana and lived a life that left nothing for anyone to blame. The Mahabharata honours Vidura as the very embodiment of dharma.

This story shows both parts of household life: love and conduct that no one can blame. Through them a simple house became the place dear to Krishna. The Lord accepted the loving banana feast rather than the royal feast with golden plates.
