Ilvaazhkkai

This chapter says that the householder is the support of ascetics, the poor and the departed ancestors. Valluvar shows that a household life joined with love and virtue is itself a high vow, and that one who lives it rightly is honoured as equal to the gods.

Introduction

Ilvaazhkkai, Domestic Life, is the first chapter of the section on household virtue. The Prologue is over, and now Valluvar brings us to the door of a house. The whole book of virtue speaks of two ways, the way of the householder and the way of the renunciant. The householder's comes first for a reason: whatever form renunciation takes, behind it stands the labour and food of householders. The opening truth is that the world does not run if no one runs the home.

'Il' in the title means home and 'vaazhkkai' means living. But this is more than dwelling under a roof. It includes a large web of relations: husband, wife, children, parents, guests and neighbours. The one who keeps that web in order without fault is called 'ilvaazhvaan' in the verse. In our tradition the word is understood to include both man and woman.

The first three verses define the householder's duties. He is the support of three kinds of people and honours five kinds of beings. The five are the ancestors, the gods, guests, kin and oneself. The fourth and fifth verses give two pillars: fear of blame together with sharing of food, and love together with virtue. The sixth, seventh and eighth verses show the height of household life, even above the life of the renunciant. The last two verses tell the honour that comes to a flawless household life.

A subtle point is worth noticing. In the chapter on the greatness of ascetics Valluvar praised those who renounced; here he raises the householder to their level. This is not a contradiction. His view is that whichever way is walked with virtue is high. Here he answers those who see household life as illusion or obstacle.

Moreover, household life is not a solo achievement. It is a shared journey in which husband and wife, joining two families, raise children and protect elders. So 'ilvaazhvaan' points not to one person but to all the members of the home.

In today's world household life meets many challenges: work pressure, loneliness, the gap between generations, lack of time. This chapter therefore seems more relevant than ever. Valluvar assures us that if a home has love, virtue, a fear of blame and the habit of sharing food, that home becomes a small temple.

Chapter story

The Housewife Who Taught Kaushika

From the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Kaushika was a brahmin learned in the Vedas who had also gained some power through austerity. One day, while he recited the Veda under a tree, a crane perched above him dropped its droppings on him. He looked at it in anger. By the power of his austerity the crane burned and fell to the ground. Kaushika felt proud of his power.

Later he went to a house to beg alms. Standing at the door he called, "Alms!" A woman inside said, "Please wait a moment." She was attending to her husband, who had come home tired and hungry. She did not leave him until he had eaten and rested. Kaushika lost patience. In anger he glared at the woman.

The woman came to the door with a gentle smile. "Brahmin, I am not a crane. Your look cannot burn me," she said. Kaushika was startled. How did she know even his hidden act? "I have not done austerities or gone to the forest. Serving my husband is my austerity; this is what has given me knowledge and power," she said.

She went on, "If you wish to know dharma fully, go to the city of Mithila and to a meat-seller named Dharmavyadha. He will teach you dharma." Kaushika set out in wonder.

In Mithila he found Dharmavyadha at his butcher's shop. Even as he went on with his trade, Dharmavyadha welcomed him and said, "I know that the lady sent you." He then took him home. There Dharmavyadha was serving his aged mother and father as his chief worship.

Dharmavyadha said, "My trade may seem low to you. But I honour my parents, speak the truth, harm no one needlessly and do my duty. This is my austerity." Kaushika realised that doing one's duty at home is as high a virtue as practising austerity in the forest.

Afterwards Kaushika thought of the reason he had left home. He realised that his own parents were alone in old age and that leaving them was wrong. He returned home at once and made serving them his first duty, says the Mahabharata.

This story shows the height of household life just as Valluvar does. A housewife doing her duty with virtue and a man keeping dharma in his trade became teachers to a brahmin who practised austerity. Household life is no obstacle; it is itself an austerity.
