Explanation

This verse lists the five duties of a householder: the ancestors, the gods, guests, kin and oneself. He calls them 'aimpulaththaaru', the five-fold path. 'Thenpulaththaar' are the ancestors; the name comes from the belief that the south is the realm of the forefathers. 'Deivam' is worship of God. 'Virundhu' is entertaining those who come. 'Okkal' is relatives and kin. 'Thaan' is looking after oneself.

The order gives us something to think about. Valluvar puts oneself last. Ancestors gave us life and name; God upholds us; the guest stands at our door; kin are the companions of our life; only after these comes our own need. He does not say we should not look after ourselves; he says it does not come first.

Older commentators also explained the verse in ritual terms: tarpana for the ancestors, worship for the gods, food for the guest, help for kin and food for oneself. In today's view we may take them as five forms of gratitude: to the past generation, to the vast order of nature, to the passer-by, to relations and to oneself.

'Ombal thalai' means that tending is chief. 'Ombudhal' means to nurture and protect. Giving a gift is a single event; tending is a continuing responsibility. Valluvar sees household life not as a collection of events but as a continuing duty.

Today many attend only to themselves and the immediate members of their family. Remembering ancestors, welcoming strangers in society and keeping up with relatives are all falling away. This verse points to that gap.

A story

Jaratkaru and the Hanging Ancestors

From the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. The sage Jaratkaru had taken to renunciation in his youth. He was firm that he would not marry. He wandered through forests, mountains and rivers doing austerities. He had no interest in household life. His aim was to reach a high state by his penance.

One day, in a ruined cave, he saw a strange sight. Some elders were hanging head downward from a rope. The rope was only a single strand of grass root. A rat was slowly gnawing at it. The elders were thin and sunk in sorrow.

Moved, Jaratkaru asked, "Who are you? Why do you hang like this?" They said, "We are your ancestors. In our line only one is left to continue the family, and that is you. Because you too remain unmarried in austerity, our line is about to end. When the rat cuts that root we shall fall into deep hell."

Jaratkaru thought. "I cannot push my ancestors into hell for the sake of being a renunciant," he decided. "I accept household life. I will marry a woman and have a son. Your suffering will end," he promised.

But he had three conditions. The bride must have his own name; her relatives must give her of their own accord; and he would not take the duty of maintaining her. Vasuki, king of the nagas, gave his sister in marriage to him. The woman's name too was Jaratkaru.

Their son was Astika. Later, at the snake sacrifice of Janamejaya, Astika saved the nagas by his wisdom, says the Mahabharata. The story says that the hanging of the ancestors ended and they reached heaven.

The story reminds us of the first duty of household life, the debt to ancestors. However high renunciation may be, Jaratkaru's life shows it is not complete while the debt of gratitude to forefathers remains. That is why 'thenpulaththaar' comes first.
