Explanation

A home does not come into being from wealth and rank alone. Its excellence is the flavour and balance of the daily life lived in it. If the lady of the house lacks the household excellence that gives that flavour and balance, says this verse, every other excellence goes to waste.

The phrase 'enai maatchith-thaayinum' is very strong: however much excellence there may be. Great wealth, high lineage, learning, fame and health may all be present, yet if there is no peace in the house they all turn into burdens.

To read this as a verse that loads everything on one woman is a thin understanding. The verse stresses the wife's role because in that age the daily management of the home was in her charge. Today that management is shared by both. So it is fitting to widen 'manai-maatchi' into 'the harmony and order of the home'.

Many commentators explain 'manai-maatchi' as chastity, restraint, sweet speech and skill in guarding the home. The words differ but the idea is one: what is praised here is the power to create a good atmosphere within the house.

When the home is peaceful, the husband works outside with a clear mind, the children grow without fear, and visitors go away glad. When the home is full of strife, even the successes won outside bring no comfort to the heart.

The Ramayana stands as a great warning here. Ayodhya was a city full of wealth and fame, yet when the harmony of the palace broke, all its splendour became sorrow in a single day.

A story

One Day in Ayodhya

The Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana opens with the picture of a most beautiful city. King Dasharatha ruled it. The city was rich, its people were happy, and his four sons were of good character. Dasharatha decided to crown Rama as prince regent. The whole city was in festival with decorations and joy.

Kaikeyi loved Rama dearly. On hearing the news of his coronation she was glad at first, and even gave a gift to Manthara, the maid who brought the happy tidings. But Manthara, displeased, sowed doubt and fear in her mind. "If Rama becomes king, what will become of your son Bharata?" she said again and again. Those poisonous words changed Kaikeyi's heart.

Kaikeyi reminded Dasharatha of the two boons he had once granted her, and asked for them: the crown for Bharata, and fourteen years of forest life for Rama. Dasharatha begged her in tears. But he could not break the word he had given with the boons.

Rama set out calmly for the forest. Sita and Lakshmana went with him. Dasharatha could not bear the grief and gave up his life. When Bharata returned and learned what had happened he rebuked his mother harshly, refused the throne, and went to the forest to bring Rama back.

A city that had everything, a palace ready for joy, sank into sorrow in a single day because the harmony of one heart was broken. The Ramayana also shows that Kaikeyi in the end regretted her act.

The lesson is not merely to blame one woman. It is how delicate the harmony of a home is, and how much ruin one wrong counsel that finds the ear can bring. Household excellence also teaches us to choose carefully the words we allow ourselves to hear within the home.
