Explanation

Commentators differ over one word in this verse. For 'pukazh purindha il', Parimelazhagar reads it as those who have a wife who desires good name, and the verse concerns those who lack such a wife. For 'eru', the common sense is bull; some take it as lion. In both, the idea is a majestic gait.

The centre of the verse is very clear. What helps a person stand tall when others scorn him is the good name of his home. If the home has a good name, scorn from the outside world cannot make him tremble. If there is a flaw in the home itself, the heart bows at any small accusation.

Here 'peedu nadai' is not an arrogant walk. It is the quiet walk that comes from the peace of knowing that one's life is without blemish. One without that confidence is afraid inside, however loudly he shouts.

Fame is not publicity. It is the good name that a home earns by virtue and love. That name is built from the conduct of the woman of the house and the honesty of the husband, with a share from both.

Today we may see it thus: the peace and honesty of one's home are the ground on which one can speak and stand boldly outside. Who we are at home becomes the strength of our walk outside.

A story

Raghavan at the Panguni Uthiram Assembly

This is an invented story. In a village near Thanjavur lived a schoolteacher named Raghavan. His wife was Kamala. Theirs was not a wealthy house. But everyone in the village respected it. The reason was that every evening Kamala taught the neighbourhood girls to read and write, and the Tevaram hymns, in the courtyard of her house. When wayfarers came she served them buttermilk first. No one in that house ever turned away a poor person.

For the Panguni Uthiram temple festival, the charge of the temple accounts came to Raghavan. A man named Subbaiah, who coveted position in the village, wanted it. In the village assembly he rose and said mockingly, "Does a teacher know accounts? He is not fit for this." A few laughed.

Raghavan stood up calmly. There was no trouble on his face. "My deeds will tell my worth. The accounts of my house and my school are known to the village. Let anyone examine them on any day," he said.

Then an old man at the back of the assembly rose. "My granddaughter learned her letters in that house. When my son came as a wayfarer, Kamala amma gave him food. The whole village is witness to the name of Raghavan's house," he said. When the assembly broke up, Subbaiah went away with his head bowed in shame.

That night Raghavan said to his wife, "I stood tall in the assembly today, not because of my own skill, but because of the good name you earned." Kamala laughed, "No. It is a house we have made together."

A good name is made in the home by both, and it is what gives strength to one's walk outside.
