Explanation

Tamil tradition says numbers and letters are like the two eyes. Arithmetic and learning are the foundation of life. To belittle them, asking "What use are these?", is like walking with your eyes shut.

Writing preserves knowledge across time; numbers bring order to life. One who honours both is truly wise.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva (traditional recensions)

Ganesha Writes the Mahabharata

From the traditional recensions of the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. Vyasa had composed the Mahabharata in his mind. When he wondered who could write it down, Brahma told him to call upon Ganesha.

Ganesha said, "You must dictate without pausing for even a moment while I write." Vyasa set his own condition: "You must understand the meaning of every verse before you write it." Now and then Vyasa recited difficult verses, and while Ganesha pondered them, Vyasa composed the next ones.

The god himself sat as scribe and wrote each letter knowing its meaning. Because writing was treated not as a trifle but as worship, that great epic has come down to us.
