Mahabharata, Adi ParvaDevavrata's Terrible Vow
From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. King Shantanu wished to marry Satyavati, daughter of the fisher chief. But her father set a condition: 'My daughter's son must be king.' Unwilling to wrong his heir, Prince Devavrata, Shantanu pined in silence.
His father said nothing. But Devavrata found out the cause of his sorrow himself, went to the fisher chief and vowed: 'I give up the throne. And so that no child of mine claims it, I will never marry as long as I live.' The gods showered flowers and hailed him as Bhishma, 'the one of the terrible vow'.
Overjoyed, Shantanu granted him the boon that death would come to him only when he chose it.
