Mahabharata, Shanti ParvaJajali and the Merchant Tuladhara
From the Mahabharata, Shanti Parva. The sage Jajali performed fierce penance. He stood so still that birds built nests in his matted hair, laid eggs and raised their young there. He grew proud: 'Who has practised dharma as I have?'
Then a voice said, 'You are not the equal of Tuladhara, the merchant of Varanasi.' Jajali went to find him. That householder, who weighed his goods honestly and lived in friendship with all beings, harming none, taught Jajali the subtle truth of dharma.
The honesty of a shopkeeper's scales stood higher than the penance of the forest.
