Explanation

Killer elephants charge and smash the enemies' white umbrellas, and wherever they enter there are corpses. The field looks like a carpenter's workshop strewn with pieces of wood and shavings.

The umbrella is the sign of a king's dignity; its shattering is the fall of a kingdom. Showing broken umbrellas and scattered bodies through the simple image of a carpenter's workshop conveys the destruction of war as a picture of disorder.

From the Mahabharata (Drona Parva)

The Narayanastra and the Laying Down of Arms

From the Mahabharata. Learning how his father Drona had been killed, Ashvatthama was consumed by rage. He loosed the Narayanastra upon the Pandava army. Countless blazing arrows, discuses and maces rained from the sky, and the Pandava army scattered everywhere.

The weapon struck hardest at those who fought back. Then Krishna stepped down from the chariot and cried aloud: "Everyone, throw down your weapons! Get down from your chariots and elephants! This weapon destroys only those who resist it; it does not touch those who submit."

All laid down their arms. Only Bhima stood defiant with his mace: "I will not bow." The weapon's fire closed around him. Krishna and Arjuna ran to him, dragged him from his chariot by force, and wrenched the mace from his hand. At that very moment the weapon subsided.

Where strength could not win, humility saved. Amid destruction like this verse's field of shattered umbrellas, the story says that selfless humility is the way that saves life.
