From the Mahabharata (Bhishma Parva)Krishna Takes Up the Wheel
From the Mahabharata. Before the war Krishna had said, "I will not take up arms in this war; I will only be Arjuna's charioteer." But on the days Bhishma fought with his full might, the Pandava army scattered. Arjuna was reluctant to fight Bhishma, whom he loved like a grandfather, and his arrows flew gently.
Bhishma's arrows struck Arjuna and Krishna. Soldiers fled, leaving their drums and banners. Seeing this, Krishna grew angry, dropped the reins and leapt down from the chariot. Taking up a chariot wheel, he ran at Bhishma.
Bhishma laid down his bow, joined his palms and said with joy: "Come, lotus-eyed one! To fall by your hand would be my great fortune." Later devotees sang that the Lord gave up His own vow to keep His devotee's.
Arjuna ran and caught Krishna's feet to stop him: "Do not break your vow; I will fight with all my strength." Krishna turned back and mounted the chariot.
Bhishma, unmoved in the midst of chaos, is the form of steadfast leadership; Krishna, who came down for His devotee, is the form of grace.
