From the Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana)The Goddess Slays Mahishasura
From the Devi Mahatmya. Mahisha, the buffalo demon, conquered the gods and seized Indra's throne. The defeated gods went with Brahma to Shiva and Vishnu and told their plight. As they listened, a great light blazed from the faces of the three gods and from the bodies of all the gods, and merged into the form of a Goddess.
Shiva gave her his trident, Vishnu his discus, Indra his thunderbolt, and the Himalaya a lion. Each god gave his weapon, and the Goddess, seated on the lion, let out a mighty laugh. The worlds shook.
Mahisha's generals came with countless elephants, chariots and horses. The Goddess struck them all down, and the field turned red with blood. At last Mahisha fought her in the forms of a buffalo, a lion and an elephant. The Goddess pressed him down with her foot, struck him with her trident, and as he half emerged in his true form, cut off his head with her sword. The gods sang her praise.
That field, where the dark, mountainous demon army fell red, is the Puranic form of a war that destroys evil and restores dharma. That is why, even today, Tamils and all Indians celebrate that victory at Navaratri.
