Explanation

Corpses are heaped in all four directions, and elephants lie fallen in piles, looking like great mountains shattered by thunderbolts from the sky. 'Sembiyan' is a clan name of the Cholas, as descendants of the emperor Shibi.

The poet says that one king defeated several enemy kings at once, and he conveys the scale of that victory through an image of natural catastrophe, mountains shattered by thunder.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Aranya Kanda)

Rama Alone at Janasthana

From the Valmiki Ramayana. After Lakshmana cut off Shurpanakha's nose, she went to her brother Khara and cried out for vengeance. Khara, Dushana and Trishiras marched on Panchavati with fourteen thousand rakshasas.

Rama told Lakshmana: "Take Sita to a mountain cave; I will face them alone." Lakshmana hesitated but obeyed his brother. Rama put on his armour, strung his bow, and stood alone before the hermitage.

The rakshasa army came like a sea and surrounded him. Rama's arrows flew like thunderbolts. Mountainous rakshasas with their elephants, horses and chariots fell in all four directions. Dushana and Trishiras fell. At last Rama fought Khara face to face and brought him down with an arrow given by Indra. Valmiki says all fourteen thousand fell within an hour and a half.

Gods and sages showered flowers from the sky, and Sita came from the cave and embraced Rama. But this battle turned Ravana's attention toward Rama; the great war began from here.

Rama's battle, standing alone, is a fitting example of the field this verse describes, where foes fell in all four directions.

To reflect on

Is there something you must face alone while others stand back? What strength would help you do it?
