From the Mahabharata (Drona Parva)The Slaying of Jayadratha
From the Mahabharata. Learning that Jayadratha, who had held the Pandavas back at the breach of the formation, was the cause of Abhimanyu's death, Arjuna vowed: "Before the sun sets tomorrow I will kill Jayadratha, or I will enter the fire and give up my life."
The next day the Kauravas hid Jayadratha far at the rear, inside formation upon formation. All day Arjuna fought his way through those layers. The field filled with the fallen, and birds and beasts gathered round the battlefield. When his horses tired, Arjuna split the ground with an arrow to bring up water for them, and Krishna tended them.
Evening drew near and Jayadratha was still far away. Then Krishna, by his yogic power, veiled the sun, and darkness fell. Thinking the sun had set, Jayadratha came out rejoicing. At once Krishna lifted the darkness. "There is the sun, and there is Jayadratha," he said, and Arjuna's arrow struck off Jayadratha's head.
That day-long battle recalls this verse's field, where blood changed the colour of land and birds; and it also tells that the Lord will bend time itself to protect dharma.
