Explanation

Vultures spread their wings and drag the corpses lying in the blood. Their wingbeats and the bobbing of their heads look like the hand movements of a drummer keeping perfect time.

Birds circling a battlefield are a familiar sight in Sangam war poems, but comparing them to a musician is Poigaiyar's own touch. After the roar of victory, what remains on the field is this quiet, grim rhythm.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda)

'Go Now, Come Back Tomorrow'

From the Valmiki Ramayana. After many of his commanders had fallen, Ravana came to the battlefield himself for the first time. He struck Hanuman and Lakshmana and scattered the vanara army. At last Rama faced him.

A fierce duel followed. Rama's arrows brought down Ravana's charioteer, killed his horses, cut his banner, broke his bow and sent his crown crashing to the ground. Ravana stood on the field without weapon, chariot or crown.

In that state Rama did not kill him. He said: "You have fought a great battle today and you are weary. To kill a weary man is not dharma. Go back to Lanka and rest. Come tomorrow with a new chariot and bow, and then you will see my strength."

Ashamed, his head bowed, Ravana returned to Lanka. Kamban later made this moment famous in Tamil as 'inru poy naalai vaa', go now, come back tomorrow.

Even in the midst of a battlefield where birds seize the dead, there is the law of dharma yuddha: do not strike the unarmed or the weary. Rama's act shows it.
