From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda)The Vanara Army Builds the Bridge
From the Valmiki Ramayana. After Hanuman had found Sita in Lanka, Rama reached the shore of the southern ocean with the vanara army. Seeking a way across, he lay for three days on darbha grass praying to the Ocean, but the Ocean did not come.
Angered, Rama took up his bow and loosed arrows, saying, "I will dry up this ocean." The sea heaved and its creatures trembled. Then the Ocean appeared with folded hands: "I cannot change my nature. But in your army is Nala, son of Vishvakarma. I will bear up the bridge he builds."
The vanara army tore up hills, rocks and trees and brought them. Vanaras huge as elephants leapt about with roars and hurled stones into the sea. Under Nala's guidance, a bridge a hundred yojanas long was finished in five days. Over it the vanara army moved toward Lanka with banners and shouts.
This verse's army charging enough to shake the hills, with banners sweeping the sky, comes alive in the advance of the vanara army across Rama Setu.
