Explanation

Heads cut down by strong-shouldered warriors roll on the ground in every direction, like palmyra fruit fallen in a grove after a great gale. The palmyra was the Chera emblem (the Chera garland was of palmyra flowers), so the ravaged grove may also hint at the fall of the Chera army.

This is one of the book's harshest scenes. By comparing it to what one sees in a village after a storm, the poet leaves the feeling that war, too, is a devastating storm.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda)

Lakshmana Defeats Indrajit

From the Valmiki Ramayana. Ravana's son Indrajit was a master of magical warfare who shot his arrows hidden in the clouds. Twice he had struck down Rama and Lakshmana. Vibhishana warned that if Indrajit completed a sacrifice at Nikumbhila, no one could ever defeat him.

With Rama's leave, Lakshmana, Vibhishana and Hanuman went to Nikumbhila before the rite was finished, and the sacrifice was broken off. Enraged, Indrajit fought Lakshmana face to face. Valmiki says the duel went on for three days and nights.

At last Lakshmana set an arrow to his bow and said, "If Rama, son of Dasharatha, is truly devoted to dharma, true in speech and peerless in valour, let this arrow slay Indrajit," and loosed it. The arrow struck off Indrajit's head. The rakshasa army scattered and fled, and the gods showered flowers.

This victory showed that strength lies not in illusion but in dharma. That field, where the rakshasa army scattered like a palmyra grove in a gale, meets this verse's scene.
