Explanation

A red-eared cock rising with a severed hand in its beak looks like Garuda flying into the sky with a five-hooded serpent. The five fingers look like the five serpent heads: a sharp and striking simile.

There is a subtle irony in comparing a small cock to the mighty Garuda: on the battlefield even small things look large. It also shows how familiar the Purana of Garuda's victory over the serpents was to Tamil audiences.

From the Mahabharata (Adi Parva)

Garuda Brings the Nectar

From the Mahabharata. The sage Kashyapa had two wives, Kadru and Vinata. Kadru's sons were the serpents; Vinata's son was Garuda. Kadru won a wager by deceit and made Vinata her slave. Garuda asked the serpents what it would take to free his mother. "Bring us the nectar from heaven," they said.

Garuda flew to heaven. He defeated the gods who guarded the nectar, slipped through the gaps of a spinning, razor-edged wheel, and overcame the two great serpents on watch. He took the pot of nectar and flew off, but did not drink a single drop himself.

On the way Indra hurled his thunderbolt. Out of respect, Garuda let fall a single feather and was otherwise unhurt. Seeing his selflessness, Vishnu granted him a boon and took him as His mount.

Garuda set the nectar on darbha grass before the serpents: "Bathe and then drink; my mother is now free." While the serpents went to bathe, Indra took the nectar back. From that day Garuda has been the enemy of serpents, and the image of Garuda flying with a serpent in his beak was born.

The valour of Garuda, who took on heaven itself for his mother's sake, gives a powerful background to this verse's simile.
