Explanation

Blood pooled in the footprints of elephants stamping angrily through the red mire looks like great jars filled with flower-scented water. The image of the jar of scented water kept at home to welcome guests appears on the battlefield.

The contrast is the poet's purpose: when the gentleness of home and the cruelty of the field stand side by side, the price of war is felt more deeply.

From the Mahabharata (Karna Parva)

Bhima Fulfils His Vow

From the Mahabharata. On the day the Pandavas lost everything at dice, Dushasana dragged Draupadi into the hall by her hair and tried to strip her of her garment. By Krishna's grace her honour was protected. Then Bhima swore before the assembly: "On the battlefield I will bring this man down and tear open his chest." Draupadi too vowed not to bind her hair until that day.

Thirteen years passed. On the seventeenth day of the war, Bhima met Dushasana on the field. After a fierce fight he threw him from his chariot. As both armies watched in dread, Bhima fulfilled his vow, and the Kaurava warriors trembled at his fury.

Then Bhima went to Draupadi. Tradition says that her hair, left loose for thirteen years, was bound only on that day.

The insult done to one woman demanded its price on the battlefield many years later. This verse's field of pooled blood reminds us how terrible the fruit of injustice can be.

To reflect on

Have you seen an insult bear consequences long after it was given? Whose dignity could you protect today?
