Meaning

O fragrant flowering creeper, joined to your dancing Lord as a word is joined to its meaning! Only those who worship your fresh-flower feet night and day will gain an empire that never falls, the path of penance that leads on, and the world of Shiva.

Explanation

The image 'like word and meaning' is very old. Without the word, the meaning cannot be expressed; without the meaning, the word is only sound. Shiva and Shakti are the same: neither exists without the other. Bhattar calls Shiva 'her dancing consort'. The dancer and the energy of the dance cannot be separated.

The second half gives the fruits: an empire that never falls in this life, the path of penance while living, and the world of Shiva at the end. The three blessings of verse 15 return here, but with a condition: 'for those who worship night and day'.

Life of Kalidasa, the Raghuvamsa

Kalidasa, Made a Poet by Kali's Grace

From tradition. Once an unlettered young man sat on a tree branch, cutting the very branch he sat on. Some scholars who wanted revenge on the learned princess Vidyottama lied that he was a great scholar and got him married to her.

When she learned the truth, the princess sent him away. In shame he went to a temple of Kali and prayed to the Mother, ready even to give up his life. Mother Kali appeared and wrote the sacred seed syllable on his tongue. At that moment he became a great poet, and was called Kalidasa, 'servant of Kali'.

The very first verse of his Raghuvamsa begins 'vagarthaviva samprktau': I bow to Parvati and Parameshvara, joined like word and meaning. The image Bhattar uses in this verse is there in the first words of the poet who received Kali's grace.
