Devi Bhagavata Purana, Book 1The Half Verse Heard by the Child on the Banyan Leaf
From the Devi Bhagavata Purana. At the time of the great dissolution all the worlds lay under water. On that endless ocean Vishnu floated on a banyan leaf as a small child, sucking his toe. He wondered, 'Who am I? Who placed me here?'
Then a voice sounded from the sky in half a verse: 'Sarvam khalvidam evaham, nanyad asti sanatanam': 'All this is indeed I; there is nothing eternal other than me.' The child meditated on whose voice it was.
Then the Goddess appeared, four-armed, holding the noose and the goad and showing the gestures of protection and blessing. 'I am Parashakti,' she said. 'I am your power too.' The Mother planted the seed of understanding even in Vishnu. She is what Bhattar calls 'the seed of liberation, and the understanding that sprouts from the seed'.
