Explanation

Until now the poet has spoken about himself or to Murugan. Here he turns to us. His argument is simple. The learning and knowledge you possess are not your own achievement; they are gifts of the Lord of the vel. And why were they given? 'Thaame pera', so that you yourselves might reach the truth.

If that is so, the gift must not be wasted on infatuation with the passing things of the earth. Let that infatuation fall away and join yourself to what is real. The doubled 'nadaveer nadaveer', 'walk on, walk on', carries urgency: do not delay any longer.

The thought is old in Tamil. Thiruvalluvar asked what use learning is if it does not lead one to bow at the feet of the One who is pure knowledge. Arunagirinathar, a man of great learning himself, gives the same counsel: learning that ends in pride is a burden; learning that ends at the Lord's feet is fulfilled.

Tradition of the Kanda Puranam's first recital, Kumarakottam, Kanchipuram

The Book Whose First Line Murugan Gave

From the tradition of the Kanda Puranam. Kachiyappa Sivachariyar, a priest of the Kumarakottam temple in Kanchipuram, wished to sing the story of Murugan in Tamil. As he struggled over how to begin, tradition says Murugan appeared in his dream and gave him the first line: 'Thigada chakkarach chemmugam aindhulaan'.

When the book was presented before the assembly of scholars, one of them rose and objected: 'There is no rule of grammar that allows the word-join thigada-chakkaram.' Kachiyappar replied, 'That line was given by Murugan.' The next day a scholar from the Chola country arrived and showed a grammar text that contained the very rule. Everyone understood that the visiting scholar was Murugan himself.

It is a fine illustration of this verse: our learning and our knowledge are given by the Lord of the vel, and they find their meaning when they are offered back to him.

To reflect on

If your learning and skills are gifts, what are you using them for?
