The Alvar tradition, life of Thirumangai AlvarThe Highway Robber Who Became an Alvar
From the Alvar tradition. Neelan was a chieftain in the Chola country. To marry Kumudavalli, a devout woman, he promised to feed a thousand devotees every day for a year. When his wealth ran out, he turned to highway robbery to keep his vow.
One night Lord Vishnu himself came along the road disguised as a rich bridegroom. Neelan stripped him of his jewels, and when one toe ring would not come off, he bent to bite it loose. At that moment the traveller whispered into his ear the sacred mantra, 'Om Namo Narayanaya'. Neelan was transformed on the spot and became Thirumangai Alvar, whose hymns, including the Periya Thirumozhi, are still sung in temples.
The Lord came in person to claim a man who had fallen into low deeds, and became his life from then on. It is the very turn this verse makes, from 'a ruined life' to 'from now on, you be my life'.
