Meaning

O mind, go now, taking refuge in the lotus feet of the beautiful spear-bearer praised by the Vedas and Agamas, feet adorned with vetchi flowers and anklets, and hide yourself in that open space where there is neither night nor day nor deceit, and simply be still. No element will ever know of it.

Explanation

'The place without night or day' is the state where the mind no longer wanders among thoughts. There the mind 'hides'; the body and world made of the five elements cannot know it. It is another form of the teaching 'be still' that Arunagirinathar returns to again and again.

From the Thirumandiram tradition

Thirumoolar's silence

The Periya Puranam says that a siddha who came south from Kailasa entered the body of Moolan, a cowherd who lay dead at Sathanur, and cared for his cows. Later he sat under a peepal tree at Thiruvavaduthurai in deep meditation. Tradition says he sang one verse a year, three thousand verses that became the Thirumandiram. In between, he rested in a silence that knew neither night nor day.

To reflect on

Can you rest without thoughts for even five minutes a day?
