Meaning

O fools who think to live in this world without bowing at the feet of the Lord of the rooster banner! Your stubborn karmic ills and the great force of fate will not even let you eat. If you bury all your wealth deep, will it follow you after your death?

Explanation

The previous verse said 'share'; this one says 'do not hoard'. Fate is strong; even with wealth one may be unable to enjoy it. Wisdom is to bow to the Lord and live by sharing what one has.

From the Mahalaya Paksha tradition

Karna's gold

Karna, the great giver, died and went to heaven. There he was served only gold and jewels as food. Starving, he asked why. 'In life you gave away gold freely, but you never offered even a handful of food to your ancestors,' came the reply. Tradition says he returned to earth for fifteen days and offered food to his ancestors, and that became the Mahalaya Paksha. Not gold, but food given with love goes with us.
