இளையான்குடியில் வாழ்ந்த மாறநாயனார் சிவனடியார்களுக்கு உணவளிப்பதைத் தவறாமல் செய்தார். சோதனையாக அவர் செல்வம் எல்லாம் குறைந்தது. ஒரு மழை இரவில் அடியார் ஒருவர் பசியோடு வந்தார். வீட்டில் ஒன்றுமில்லை. அன்று மாலைதான் விதைத்திருந்த நெல்லை வயலில் இருந்து மழையில் வாரி எடுத்து வந்தார். மனைவி அதைக் குத்தி, வீட்டின் கூரைக் கழிகளை எரித்துச் சமைத்தார். அந்த அடியார் சிவபெருமானாகக் காட்சி தந்து இருவருக்கும் அருள் செய்தார்.
Mara Nayanar of Ilayankudi never failed to feed the devotees of Shiva. As a test, his wealth dwindled away. One rainy night a hungry devotee arrived and there was nothing in the house. Mara went out in the rain and gathered the paddy he had sown in the field that very evening. His wife pounded it and cooked it, burning the rafters of their roof as fuel. The guest revealed himself as Shiva and blessed them both.
