Explanation

So far Valluvar has spoken of the harm to ordinary people of speaking useless things. In this verse he warns even the lofty. 'Neermai udaiyaar' are those of good nature, those of noble character. Even they, if they speak useless words, will lose their 'seermai', greatness and eminence, along with their distinction.

The strength of the noble lies in their speech and conduct. What people expect from them is counsel, guidance and clarity. If they start idle talk, people's expectation is disappointed. The respect with which they used to be held diminishes. Distinction is standing above the ordinary level; to maintain that height, every word must be weighed.

There is a reason why the fault of the lofty appears large. As they are examples to many, even their small mistakes may be copied by many. The words of a teacher, a leader, an elder or an ascetic have great impact on society. So restraint of speech is an added duty for them.

There is another subtlety in 'payanila solin'. When a person of distinction boasts, it destroys his distinction. One who speaks of his own valour or wealth diminishes his true eminence. True greatness is spoken of by others' mouths, not by one's own.

As we grow and rise, the weight of our speech must increase. The higher we climb, the more caution is needed.

A story

Parashurama's Pride

This is the story of Parashurama told in the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Rama broke Shiva's bow at Mithila and married Sita. On the way back to Ayodhya after the wedding, a great gale blew so that the forest shook. Trees fell. Then Parashurama, with axe in hand and a form blazing like lightning, appeared in front of them. He was Jamadagni's son, destroyer of kings many times over, renowned for his penance and valour.

Without even respecting Dasharatha, Parashurama addressed Rama: "Rama, I hear you broke Shiva's bow. That is no great feat. Here is Vishnu's bow. String it and show me. If you do, I will fight you." He talked long of his greatness: how many times he had defeated kings and how he had given the earth in gift to Kashyapa.

Dasharatha in fear pleaded, "Sage, spare my sons." But Parashurama did not listen. Rama calmly took the bow from his hand. He strung it with ease. Fitting an arrow he asked humbly, "This arrow will not go in vain; at what shall I shoot it?"

Parashurama's radiance dimmed. He felt as if the power gained by his penance had passed to Rama. "I have understood you are a portion of Vishnu. Shoot the arrow at the worlds I have gained by penance," he said. Rama did so. Parashurama bowed his head and departed to Mount Mahendra.

Though exalted in penance, Parashurama's 'seermai' was diminished at that spot by his talk of pride. His ascetic power became a great loss. It is evidence that even those of noble nature lose their distinction by useless speech.
