Explanation

'Paarithu' means expanding, multiplying, making abundant. Valluvar says that the speech of one in the habit of spreading out useless ideas at length declares of itself that he is 'nayanilan', a man without good qualities. He need say nothing else about himself. His speech itself announces his character.

Speech is a mirror. In it a man's intelligence, mood, character and sense of responsibility are all reflected. The one who talks idly, knowingly or unknowingly, reveals his disorder and thoughtlessness. When he speaks at length, layer upon layer, without use, he proclaims that he lacks virtues like honesty, compassion and respect.

There is another sense in 'paarithu uraikkum urai': making a small matter big, exaggerating. This also distorts truth. A habit of inflating a small event may in time turn into falsehood.

In our life today this stands in many forms: advertising talk, boastful talk, exaggerated news. Those who speak proudly of themselves, 'I did this, I did that', actually show their emptiness. A Tamil proverb says that a full pot does not slosh. The speech of one full of wisdom has restraint and brevity.

So we must be aware that our speech is a declaration of our character. Every word we say tells others something about us.

A story

Uttara Kumara's Boast

This is the story of Uttara Kumara told in the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata. The Pandavas spent the year of incognito in the Matsya kingdom of Virata. Arjuna, under the name Brihannala, was the dance teacher of the princess. One day Virata had gone with his army to fight the Trigartas. Then the Kauravas came from the north and attacked to seize the herds of cattle.

The one in the palace was Virata's son Uttara Kumara. Hearing there was no one to protect the cattle, he boasted before the women. "If only I get a charioteer I will destroy the Kauravas. Bhishma, Drona, Karna, I fear none. I will go right now and drive them away in a moment," he said noisily. The women and attendants there were listening to this talk.

Draupadi, then in the disguise of Sairandhri, recommended Brihannala as his charioteer. Uttara Kumara agreed. The chariot set out. But when he saw from afar the great Kaurava army, the chariots, elephants and banners, and warriors like Bhishma, Drona and Karna, his body trembled.

"Stop the chariot! I cannot face these. I am going back," he cried, jumped from the chariot and ran. The mouth that spoke of valour now screamed. Brihannala ran after and caught him. "Prince, do not run. Having boasted before the women, if you retreat now everyone will mock you," she said.

Then Arjuna revealed his true form to Uttara Kumara. With Uttara as charioteer, Arjuna alone defeated the Kauravas and rescued the cattle. Uttara did nothing in the fight; he was a hero only in speech.

One who had spoken many empty boasts trembled when the time for action came, and so revealed his own emptiness. This event is a witness to the verse: speech that multiplies useless words declares that the speaker lacks virtue.
