Explanation

This is the harshest verse in the chapter. 'Makan' means man. 'Padhadi' is the empty husk of paddy with no grain inside. In the field when the paddy ripens and the ears stand full, some ears look plump but are empty skins within. Farmers set them aside as chaff. In the same way, Valluvar says, a man who delights in useless speech is, though in the form of a man, useless within.

Notice the word 'paaraattuvaan': one who praises or cherishes. It is one thing to speak something useless by mistake once; it is another to honour such speech, to find pleasure in it and make it a habit. The cherisher is one who sees it not as a fault but as a pride. This harsh word is against such a one.

The distinction of human birth is reason and the power of speech. With these we can grow dharma and share knowledge. One who wastes that power loses the right to the name of man. This is not just a word of scorn; it is also a challenge to reform him. The right to choose between being chaff and being a full ear is his own.

The experience of farmers is that a full ear bows low while chaff stands upright. Likewise, those full of knowledge are humble; the empty talker stands boisterously. The comparison fits beautifully.

This verse should first turn on ourselves. Let us identify the habits of empty talk in us and become full ears of grain.

A story

Velan and the Threshing Floor

This is an imagined story from the life of Tamil farmers. Velan was a young man, the son of the owner of a large paddy field in the Thanjavur region. He had education and physical strength. But he had a great fondness for talk. He spent more time in idle chatter than in work. Sitting at the village shop door and speaking about someone, boasting that he was a big man, and enlarging imaginary tales were his pastimes. He regarded these as his talent and even spoke of them with pride.

The harvest season came. Velan's father, an old farmer, took his son to the threshing floor. There the paddy had been threshed and heaped. He took some grain in a winnowing tray and tossed it in the wind to show. The heavy grains fell at the front of the tray. The light chaff flew away in the wind.

"Son, look at this. The chaff looks plump but flies off in the wind. The grain bows low and stays in our tray. Among men too there are two kinds. Those with useful speech and deeds stand like grains. Those who delight in empty talk fly like chaff in the wind. They have no place in the village," he said.

Velan watched the scene keenly. He thought how everyone in the village saw him. 'Velan is a talker' was his identity; no one placed trust in him for their work. From that day Velan slowly changed. He went to the field at dawn. He learned irrigation, manure and harvest. His mouth quietened; his hands worked more.

The next year his field gave a higher yield. The villagers began to respect him. When he spoke they gave ear. One who was chaff became a grain that stood humble.

To reflect on

Does my pride lie in empty words or in full deeds?
