Explanation

The first verse of the chapter states a simple truth: everyone despises one who talks uselessly. 'Pallaar muniya' means so that many are vexed. He speaks without purpose; those who hear him grow weary. Weariness first turns into silent dislike, then grows into open contempt.

Everyone's time is valuable. If a man goes on stretching useless talk, listeners regret that their time is wasted. Even if they do not say so openly, they walk away on seeing him. They frown when he is about to arrive. When this situation overtakes a man, his social standing falls entirely.

There is a severity in the phrase 'ellaarum ellappadum': not some, but everyone. His relatives, friends, neighbours and colleagues will regard him as a laughing stock. Even an important message that he wishes to deliver will not be heard when it comes from his mouth.

In this verse Valluvar may also be hinting at the measure of speech. Even useful speech becomes useless if it drags on too long. So the way of the wise is to say what must be said briefly and clearly and then stop. The state of 'one word is enough' is the mark of the great.

In our homes, meetings and online, we should watch our habit of stretching needless talk. We can ask whether our speech brings others joy, knowledge or help. If it does not, it is better to stop.

One who lacks grace and brevity in speech loses respect and also finds that even his true opinion gets no hearing.

A story

Palani's Talk

This is an imagined story from a village in Tamil Nadu. Palani was a farmer there. He was a good man who never wished anyone harm. But he had one fault: talk. He would turn one word into a hundred. On the temple veranda, in the tea shop and on the field bund he would go on telling tale after tale. If you asked what he was saying, it was whether it rained or not, who came, who went, items unconnected with one another.

At first people listened out of courtesy. In time, on seeing Palani coming, they began to take another path deliberately. If he sat in the tea shop, others rose saying they had urgent work. Children feared coming near him. The young mocked him behind his back by imitating his talk.

One day the village held an important meeting. They had to decide the order of releasing water into the canal. Palani had a sound suggestion. When he rose to speak, those at the meeting sighed. Some muttered among themselves. Though his idea was good, because it came from his mouth no one listened fully.

That night Palani's wife said to him lovingly, "You are a good man, but there is no benefit in your talk. That is why no one respects even your good ideas." Palani was grieved and thought about it.

From that day Palani changed. Before speaking he began to ask himself, "Will this be of use to anyone?" His talk became less, but when he spoke it had weight. Within a year his word in the village panchayat was respected. Useless talk had earned him scorn; useful brief speech earned him respect.

To reflect on

Before speaking, do I ask in what way my words will benefit the listener?
