Explanation

One book appears differently to each reader. To the poor it is wealth: there is no greater treasure. To the ascetic it is penance. To one who seeks dharma it is dharma in full. To the scholar it is the Veda; to others it is the Vedanta, the essence of the Veda, 'the limit of the Veda'.

The vakula garland is Nammalvar's own emblem, which is why he is called Vakulabharanan. As a garland strings many flowers together, the Thiruvaimozhi holds a flower for everyone. Whatever our state, there is a way in it for us.

Guruparampara tradition (Thirukkurugai Piran Pillan)

The Six Thousand: The First Commentary on the Thiruvaimozhi

From Vaishnava tradition. In his lifetime Ramanuja wrote great works in Sanskrit, such as the Sri Bhashya. But the task of writing a commentary on the Thiruvaimozhi he gave to a disciple, Pillan, son of his uncle Periya Thirumalai Nambi, and he gave Pillan Nammalvar's own name: Thirukkurugai Piran Pillan.

Pillan's commentary was called the Aaraayirappadi, the 'Six Thousand': six thousand units, each of thirty-two syllables. Tradition says he chose that length on purpose, because the Vishnu Purana has six thousand verses, to show that the Thiruvaimozhi deserves the honour of a Purana.

Later came commentaries of nine thousand, twelve thousand, twenty-four thousand and thirty-six thousand units, each finding new depths in the same work. This is what Kambar means by 'to some wealth, to some penance, to some the Veda': in one garland, each person finds their own flower.
