Explanation

'Arum payan' is the high benefit not easily attained: truth of life, God, dharma, liberation. 'Aayum arivinaar' are those of wisdom who investigate them. Valluvar says that those engaged in investigating the great questions of life do not speak words without great benefit.

There is a natural reason. One who travels toward a high goal saves his energy and time for it. He has no heart to waste them in small, meaningless talk. A mountain climber does not take on unnecessary load. In the same way, one engaged in the quest of wisdom does not carry unnecessary words.

In our tradition silence is a mark of wisdom. The very word 'muni' is associated with silence. Deep thought, meditation and inquiry reduce idle speech. But this is not a rule enforcing speechlessness. If a word gives rare benefit, it may be spoken. That is the nature of these wise: if they speak there is benefit; otherwise they do not.

We can connect this verse to the priorities of life. For what do we live? On what do we spend our time? Those with great goals do not engage in petty quarrels. They have no time, and no interest.

Today there are many stimuli that scatter our attention. When we withdraw from them and focus on what is important, our speech also becomes useful of itself.

A story

Dakshinamurthy's Silent Teaching

This story is drawn from the Puranic tradition of Shiva's form as Dakshinamurthy. The four sages Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and Sanatkumara were sons of Brahma. Even in youth they had mastered the Vedic texts. But their doubt about the meaning of the highest truth did not leave them. They saw that all they had learned remained as words and had not been experienced.

They went to Kailasa. There Lord Shiva sat under a banyan tree facing south, appearing as a youthful teacher. He is Dakshinamurthy. The four bowed to him with humility and presented their doubts. They had many questions.

Dakshinamurthy did not speak a word. With his right hand he showed the chin mudra, the thumb and forefinger joined, the sign that the individual soul and Brahman are one. His eyes were calm. In that silence alone, the Purana says, all the doubts in the minds of the four vanished.

Adi Shankara describes this beautifully in his Dakshinamurthy Stotra: "Wondrous it is: under the banyan the disciples are old and the teacher young; the teacher's exposition is silence, and the disciples' doubts are dispelled." A silence gave a clarity that a thousand words could not.

The life of the wise who investigate the great benefit is like this. Every word they speak has use; where it is unneeded, silence is their speech. Dakshinamurthy stands as the model of the highest teacher who transcends vain speech and teaches much by saying little.
