Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara KandaAll Ayodhya Went With Rama
From the Valmiki Ramayana. The day came for Rama to complete his avatar. He walked towards the Sarayu river. Behind him went Bharata and Shatrughna; behind them the ministers, the brahmins, the vanaras and bears, and all the people of Ayodhya.
Valmiki says that not only the people but the birds, the animals, every moving and unmoving being in Ayodhya followed Rama. That day not even a tiny creature was left behind in Ayodhya. No one grieved; there was joy on every face.
As he entered the Sarayu, Rama took his form as Vishnu. To every being that followed him, Brahma gave a high world. Merit was not weighed; to have lived in the same town as Rama was enough. Kambar says the same when he says grace is not hard to reach even for those who live near Kurugur.
