Vaishnava temple traditionSatari: The Holy Feet Placed on the Head
From Vaishnava temple tradition. In Vishnu temples, after offering holy water and tulasi, the priest gently places a small silver or gold crown on each devotee's head. The Lord's feet are engraved on it. It is called the 'Satari' or 'Sadagopam'.
Why that name? Vaishnava tradition says Nammalvar is regarded as the very feet of the Lord, the one who brings the Lord's feet to his devotees. So the crown bearing the Lord's feet carries his name. In some temples, at the Alvar's own shrine the crown is named after Madhurakavi Alvar, and at Ramanuja's shrine after his disciple Mudaliyandan: the disciple is the feet of the teacher.
The moment the Satari is placed on the head is as if God himself placed his feet on us. That is the experience Kambar sings of: 'he placed his lotus feet upon my head'. When the holy feet bearing the Alvar's name rest on one's head, there is no need to fear Death.
