One of the six paths

Kaumaram

The worship of Lord Murugan, the God of the Tamils

Kaumaram is the path that worships Lord Murugan as the Supreme; its name comes from Kumaran, "the youthful one". Six sparks from Shiva's third eye became six infants in the Saravana pond. They were nursed by the six Karthigai maidens and became one, Arumugan, the six-faced Lord, when Goddess Parvati embraced them. In Tamil, "murugu" means beauty, youth and sweetness.

The Tholkappiyam itself names Murugan, as Seyon, the god of the hill country. Nakkirar's Thirumurugatruppadai stands first among the Ten Idylls. Kachiyappa Sivachariyar sang the Kandha Puranam in Tamil, and in the fifteenth century Arunagirinathar sang the Thiruppugazh, the Kandar Anubhuti and the Kandar Alankaram. The six syllables "Saravanabhava" are Murugan's mantra.

The Arupadai Veedu, the six battle camps of Murugan, are his great shrines in Tamil Nadu: Thiruparankundram, Thiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani and Pazhamudircholai. We celebrate Kandha Sashti, the day he defeated Soorapadman with his Vel, and Thaipusam, the day Parvati gave him the Vel. "The Vel and the peacock are our protection," say Tamil devotees.

Kandha Puranam (Kachiyappa Sivachariyar)

The Vel That Won Over Soora

From the Kandha Puranam of Kachiyappa Sivachariyar. The asura Soorapadman won great boons through hard tapas. Proud of them, he conquered the three worlds and imprisoned and tormented the devas. It was fated that only a son of Shiva could defeat him.

At the devas' prayer, Shiva sent forth six sparks from his third eye, and they blossomed in the Saravana pond as Arumugan. Murugan grew up to lead the armies of the devas, and Goddess Parvati gathered all her power into a Vel, a spear, and placed it in his hand.

The great battle was fought on the shore at Thiruchendur. Soora's brothers and armies fell. At last Soora hid himself in the middle of the sea as a vast mango tree. Murugan hurled his Vel, and it split the tree in two.

But Murugan did not destroy Soora; he took him into his grace. One half of the split tree became a peacock and his vehicle; the other became a rooster and his banner. We still celebrate that day, when grace was given even to an enemy, as the Soorasamharam of Kandha Sashti at Thiruchendur. Devotees believe that the Vel splits the pride in our own hearts and turns it into the peacock that carries us.
