Explanation

This couplet places two hearts side by side. One is the heart of those who know measure; in it dharma stands firm. The other is the heart of those who know theft; in it karavu, deceit and concealment, has settled. The word nirkum, "stands", is shared by both. It shows that good and evil are not guests who come and go in the mind but residents who stay.

Karavu primarily means hiding. A thief must always hide: his act, his goods, his intention. So concealment takes up residence in his mind. By contrast the person of dharma has nothing to hide, and his face and heart match. Hence he lives in a simple peace.

The image of dharma standing like the foundation of a house is beautiful. Equally the worry is that deceit also stands firm. Once an evil habit has taken root, it is hard to remove.

Some commentators take alavarindhaar as "those who know justice". Either way the verse teaches one thing: whatever the heart is trained in settles there. It is therefore necessary to train the mind in what is good.

Another angle of this couplet concerns practice. The heart is like a field: whatever seed is planted there is what grows. For one who sows dharma, dharma grows; for one who sows concealment, concealment grows. Reading good books and keeping good company are therefore ways of establishing dharma in the mind. Doing small acts of honesty each day is the sowing itself.

A story

Sudama's Chickpeas

The Bhagavata Purana tells that Krishna and his poor friend Sudama studied together at the gurukula of the sage Sandipani. Sudama later suffered poverty. Folk tradition offers a story about the cause of that poverty. It is not in the Purana's own text; it is a later tale told among the people, and we should remember that.

According to that story, one day the guru's wife gave the two students, who were going into the forest to gather firewood, a handful of roasted chickpeas to share. Sudama, who held it, ate it himself in his hunger without Krishna's knowledge. Krishna, tired, was sleeping under a tree. Hearing the sound of chewing, he asked, "What is that noise?" Sudama covered it by saying, "My teeth are chattering with cold."

The story says that Sudama later regretted that one lie and that act of hiding his friend's share, feeling that it had cast his life into poverty. That single moment when concealment entered his mind gave him years of guilt.

Later, when he met Krishna at Dwaraka, the Bhagavata says Krishna lovingly ate a handful of the flattened rice he had brought, and Sudama's poverty ended. Putting the two tales together we may see that hiding a friend's share is karavu, and sharing in love is dharma. The couplet fits: "As dharma stands in the heart of one who knows measure, so deceit stands in the heart of one who knows theft."

To reflect on

What have you hidden from someone close to you, however small, and what would sharing it openly cost?
