Explanation

This verse paints the change from darkness to light beautifully. The leaving of 'marul', delusion, and the leaving of 'irul', darkness, are bound together. Delusion is the darkness of the mind and clarity is its light. When a lamp is lit in a room, darkness is not driven out by force; it simply disappears. In the same way delusion need not be fought; it departs the moment clarity is born.

In 'maasaru kaatchi', 'maasu' means stain or fault. If dust settles on a mirror it cannot show anything clearly, and when it is wiped the reflection appears. The dust that settles on our sight is desire, anger, comparison and prejudice. While these remain, we do not see the world; we see it coloured by our likes and dislikes. A stainless vision is impartial, clear and free of clinging.

It matters that the verse ends with 'joy comes'. True insight is not merely intellectual clarity; it also gives joy. Here joy means a deeper peace than sense pleasure: fulfilment and freedom from fear. One who walks in light does not stumble, and his journey becomes sweet.

Its use today is direct. When we look at a problem with fear it looks like a mountain, and when we look with clarity it shrinks. Clarity itself solves half of our worry. So in difficulty, instead of rushing, try to clear the darkness of the mind first. Sit quietly, name what is really being feared, and separate what is fact from what is imagination. Often the thing that frightened us loses its power the moment it is seen plainly, as a shadow does when the lamp is brought near.

A story

Arjuna's Clarity

The teaching of the Bhagavad Gita in the Mahabharata is the story of a great delusion being cleared. At the battlefield of Kurukshetra the two armies stood in array. Arjuna asked Krishna to draw his chariot between them. When he saw his relatives, teachers and friends standing opposite, his mind was shaken. He cast down his bow, sank into the chariot and said, 'I will not fight.'

The darkness in his mind at that moment was very deep. He could not tell what was dharma and what was not, nor what his duty was, and he was bewildered. His body trembled, his mouth was dry, and the bow slipped from his hand. Victory and defeat alike seemed meaningless to him.

Krishna began to teach him. The Self is indestructible; only the body changes. Do your duty without clinging to its fruit. He explained the paths of action, knowledge and devotion. In their long dialogue Krishna answered Arjuna's every question patiently, so that each doubt was removed.

At the end Arjuna said, 'My delusion is destroyed. By your grace I have regained my memory. My doubts are gone, and I stand firm. I will act as you say.' These words are found at the close of the Gita. At that moment, when the darkness in his mind departed, peace blossomed on his face.

Notice this: the battlefield had not changed. The armies stood as before. The outer world had not changed, but the way of seeing had. So the same scene that earlier looked like grief now looked like duty and was clear. This is the fruit of stainless vision.

Arjuna took up his bow. His sorrow subsided, and firmness and calm filled him.

That dialogue still shines as a light of clarity for millions. For anyone who meets Arjuna's situation in their own life, seeking clear guidance is the beginning of the way Valluvar describes.
