Explanation

The key word of this verse is 'saarpu'. Commentators explain it differently. Parimelazhagar and others take it as the chain of causes such as ignorance, action and birth. Others take it more simply as the attachments on which the mind leans. Still others take it as supports such as body and world. In any reading, the idea is the same: the remedy is to understand the support on which sorrow rests and to destroy it.

There are two kinds of ailments: the one present now and the one yet to come. The verse says 'saartharaa saarthaaru noi', the affliction that is yet to arrive. For one who has destroyed the cause, even the future affliction does not come. This is the method of a good physician, who does not merely suppress a symptom but finds and removes the root of the disease.

The first part, 'saarpu unarndhu', speaks of knowledge, and the second part, 'saarpu keda ozhugin', speaks of action. Knowledge alone is not enough; fitting conduct is needed. A man who knows that smoking harms him benefits from that knowledge only when he gives it up.

In our own lives it is vital to find the one thing that lies at the root of our troubles. Is the cause of anxiety expectation, comparison or an old wound? The way this verse shows is to examine it and arrange our lives so that it is removed. For one who knows the cause and removes it, sorrow does not return.

A story

Kapila's Teaching

In the third book of the Bhagavata Purana comes a conversation between the sage Kapila and his mother Devahuti. Devahuti, the wife of the sage Kardama, had borne many children. After Kardama went to the forest for austerity, she came to her son Kapila. Kapila is revered as an incarnation of Vishnu and as the sage who taught the Sankhya philosophy.

Devahuti bowed to her son and asked, 'My son, I have grown weary of worldly ties. Tell me the way to be free from this wheel of births. Why am I caught in it? What binds me?' It was not only a mother's question to a son, but a seeker's question to her teacher.

Kapila answered lovingly. 'Mother, it is the mind that is the cause of both bondage and freedom. If the mind clings to worldly objects it is bondage; if it clings to the Lord it becomes the way to freedom.' He also explained, the text says, that the Self is not really touched by the play of nature, and that it only imagines itself bound through its association with nature.

Here the meaning of 'saarpu', support, becomes clear: the Self leans itself upon the body, the mind and possessions. One who knows that leaning and lives loosening from it gains freedom. Kapila further taught his mother how to live uniting devotion, knowledge and discipline.

Devahuti accepted the teaching with her whole heart. She stayed in austere discipline, the Purana says, and at last attained a great peace.

In this story the humility of a mother who accepts her own son as her teacher is beautiful. A mind that honours wisdom wherever it comes from is worthy of Valluvar's path.

Kapila's teaching deepens the verse's idea: if one knows the root of sorrow and lives so that it is removed, the sorrows to come will not come.
