Explanation

This verse contains a beautiful fancy. Prosperity, in the form of a woman, goes asking, 'Where is that man's house?' on her way to the home of the man of ookkam. Normally people wander searching for wealth. But in the case of the man of ookkam, wealth itself seeks him. The simile pictures well the relation between wealth and ookkam.

The phrase 'asaivilaa ookkam' is important. If ookkam lasts a few days and then falls off, it is not enough. Valluvar wants ookkam that has no slackening and is continuous. An effort that rises once and lies down again does not bring prosperity. So for wealth to come seeking him, he must be in continuous effort. Some commentators take 'adharvinaay' as 'inquiring the way'. Others say wealth will find his way itself and come.

This is no mere lucky saying. We see daily that opportunities come to one who works. People trust one who works with alertness, give him jobs and join hands with him. Because he keeps developing his skill, he can make use of an opportunity when it comes. That is the practical explanation of wealth coming in search of him.

Conversely, the idle man would not even look at an opportunity standing at his door.

A story

Arjuna Who Received the Pashupata

From the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata: during the forest exile the Pandavas were in Dvaitavana. Realising that powerful weapons were needed for the war, Yudhishthira asked Arjuna to go and do penance at Indrakila mountain. Under Vyasa's guidance Arjuna began penance on Indrakila in the Himalayas. Seeking Shiva, he undertook severe vows.

In the first month he ate fruit once in three days, in the second month once in six days, in the third month once in fifteen days. In the fourth month he took only air for food and did penance on his toes with raised arms. The heat of his penance alarmed the sages and gods.

Wishing to test his firmness, Lord Shiva came in the form of a hunter, a Kirata, with Uma as a tribal woman. At that time an asura named Muka came as a boar to kill Arjuna. Arjuna and the Kirata shot at the boar together. It died, and a dispute arose over who had the right to the kill.

The dispute turned into a fight. Arjuna rained arrows with all his might. All were useless against the hunter. He struck with the bow; the hunter snatched the bow. He took the sword; it broke. At last he wrestled with his hands. The hunter subdued him. Arjuna fell unconscious.

When he regained consciousness, Arjuna made a Shiva linga of earth and offered flowers. Seeing that garland on the hunter's head, he realised that the one who had come was Shiva himself and bowed. Lord Shiva appeared in his true form, praised his penance and courage, and gave him the Pashupata weapon.

In this story Arjuna's ookkam did not flag. In the severity of penance and in the lost fight he did not collapse. Rising from defeat, he turned to the Lord. That is why that supreme weapon came seeking him. 'Aakkam adharvinaaych chellum asaivilaa ookkam udaiyaan uzhai.'
