Explanation

Water flowers such as the lotus and the water lily grow in water. If the water level in a pond is low, the stalk grows only so long; if the water rises, the stalk lengthens accordingly and the flower comes up above the surface. This is a truth we see in nature. Valluvar makes this natural scene a simile for human life: as the water level fixes the flower's height, the level of a person's mind fixes the height of his life.

Here 'ullam' stands for thought, drive and ideal all together. One with a small ideal will attain only a small height; one with a great ideal will go to great heights. The outer circumstance is not much of a hindrance; the mind is either the hindrance or the help. The verse gives the faith that the measure of the mind matters more than the family one is born into or one's economic state.

Yet there is also a subtle idea here. The verse shows that the flower rises only if the water rises. That is, the mind does not rise by itself; good thinking, learning and the company of good people are needed to raise it. So the effort to raise the mind can be taken as the beginning of ookkam.

It raises a question for us too: what is the water level of my mind now? What can I do today to raise it?

A story

Nachiketa

From the Katha Upanishad: the sage Vajashravas performed a sacrifice called Vishvajit, in which all his possessions were to be given away. But he gave away only old, useless cows. His son Nachiketa, though a boy, was high in wisdom. He thought this was not good for his father. 'Father, to whom will you give me?' he asked several times. Angered, the father said, 'I give you to Yama.'

Honouring his father's word, Nachiketa went to Yama's abode. Yama was out, and for three nights Nachiketa waited at his door without food or sleep. When Yama returned, he regretted that a Brahmin boy had waited hungry, and said, 'I grant you three boons for the three nights.'

As the first boon Nachiketa asked that his father's anger should subside and that he should recognise him and rejoice when he returned. As the second boon he asked to be taught the method of the fire sacrifice that leads to heaven. Yama gladly taught it and named the fire Nachiketa fire.

As the third boon Nachiketa asked: 'What happens to a man after he dies? Some say he exists, some say he does not. You must teach me this.' Yama hesitated. 'This is a very subtle question, difficult even for the gods to understand. Ask another boon.' He tempted him with long-lived sons and grandsons, cattle, elephants, gold and rule over a great land.

Nachiketa did not waver. 'These pleasures will be gone tomorrow. A man is never satisfied by wealth. And while you are here, my living is only as you will it. I desire nothing except the boon I asked,' he said. Seeing his firmness, Yama rejoiced and taught him the supreme knowledge of the imperishability of the Self. That is the essence of the Katha Upanishad.

The height of the boy's mind astonished even Yama. Small in age and body, he became great in ideal and firmness.
