Explanation

What we think of gives direction to our action and our life. So Valluvar says that our thoughts should always be lofty. 'Uyarvullal' is to think of height itself. If we keep a small goal, our growth stops once it is reached. If we keep a great goal, the very path towards it grows us. They say a stone thrown at the sky, though it does not touch the sky, goes higher than a tree; so a lofty aim lifts us.

The second line carries a consolation: 'thallinum thallaamai neerthu'. That is, even if that lofty thought is not fulfilled, its honour does not diminish. Even without success, the effort made towards the high keeps a person established as a high one. It says that one who aimed at something great and missed is more honourable than one who reached something small. The point is that fear of failure should not stop us from setting a high goal.

Commentators show a small difference over 'thallinum'. Some take it as even if it is pushed away without being fulfilled; others as even if one gives up that thought. In either case the idea is that the worth of the lofty thought does not decrease.

In life today it fits the student, the one starting a venture and the artist. When we carry lofty thoughts, our conduct too rises. Even if the goal is not reached, the skill and experience gained in the effort stay with us.

A story

Abhimanyu in the Chakravyuha

From the Drona Parva of the Mahabharata: it was the thirteenth day of the Kurukshetra war. Dronacharya formed the chakravyuha to bring down the Pandavas. Only Arjuna and Krishna knew how to open it and enter. But that day Arjuna had been drawn away to fight elsewhere. Yudhishthira sank in worry.

Then Arjuna's son Abhimanyu came forward. He was a sixteen-year-old youth. While he was in the womb of his mother Subhadra, he had heard Arjuna describe the way into this formation. But he had missed hearing the way out. Knowing this, he said, 'I shall go in; you follow behind me.' He felt himself equal to his father and to his uncle Krishna.

He told his charioteer, 'Drive the chariot.' He broke the gate of the chakravyuha and entered. But Jayadratha, by a boon received from Shiva, held back the other Pandavas from entering. Abhimanyu was caught alone. The great warriors Drona, Karna, Duryodhana, Kripa and Ashwatthama together surrounded him.

As a lone boy he brought down many warriors, including Duryodhana's son Lakshmana. When his chariot was broken, he fought with the chariot wheel itself as a weapon. At last, tradition says, he was felled in a manner against the rules of war. The whole Pandava camp wailed at his death.

Abhimanyu lost his life that day. But the effort he undertook was not in vain. His courage is still honoured as a sign of valour. By the measure of height of ookkam he stood high at a young age. Though he failed, his glory did not diminish.

There is no joy in this tale, yet it holds a sorrowful greatness that makes the meaning of 'ulluva thellaam uyarvullal matradhu thallinum thallaamai neerthu' very clear.
