Explanation

The world has an answer to the question of who is wealthy: those who own money, land and houses. Valluvar gives a different answer: the one who has ookkam. Things outside may appear to belong to a person, but they can leave him at any time. Since his ookkam is within his heart, no one can snatch it. The implied meaning is that true ownership must be of something that cannot be lost.

In the second line the question 'udaiyadhu udaiyaro matru' is pointed. A man without ookkam, even if he has obtained a large possession, loses it for he cannot guard or increase it. So it is not fitting to call him an owner at all, says Valluvar. We see those who inherit wealth losing it quickly, and those who began empty-handed growing by labour. Holding on to wealth is itself a form of ookkam.

Some commentators take the word 'matru' as a particle and give the sense 'even if he has anything else, he is not an owner'. Others take it as part of the question. In either case the result is the same: without ookkam no possession endures.

In life today the meaning is easy. There are people with degrees, posts and money who have lost interest in life and lie weary. There are also people who began with nothing and created everything through their resolve. This verse dares to call the second kind rich and the first poor.

A story

Dhruva's Exalted Seat

From the Bhagavata Purana: King Uttanapada had two wives, Suniti, the elder, and Suruchi, the younger. The king loved the younger more. Suniti's son Dhruva was a boy of five. One day, wishing to sit on his father's lap, he ran to him. Suruchi spoke harshly: 'You were not born from my womb; you are not fit to sit on this lap. If you wish, do penance to the Lord and take another birth from my womb.' The king heard it and said nothing.

Dhruva went weeping to his mother. Suniti comforted him: 'Son, if you want a lasting height, take refuge not in kings but in Vishnu, the lotus-eyed.' Those words sank into the boy's heart, and he set out for the forest.

On the way the sage Narada met him and, testing him, said, 'Child, the forest is harsh. Go back.' But Dhruva stood firm. Narada taught him the mantra 'Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya' and sent him to Madhuvana on the Yamuna's bank.

Month by month Dhruva fasted more strictly, living first on fruit, then on leaves, then on water, then on air alone, and at last standing on one foot holding his breath. The heat of his penance, says the Purana, troubled the whole world.

Vishnu appeared before him. The boy could not find words. When the Lord touched his cheek lightly with his conch, Vedic knowledge arose in his speech and he praised him. When asked, 'What boon do you want?', Dhruva realised that the purpose for which he had come was small, and felt ashamed. The Lord granted him a kingdom, long life, and at the end a seat no world could shake. That is the Pole Star, Dhruva, still standing fixed in the sky.

Dhruva had neither gold nor army, only ookkam, and it carried him to a height not even kings could reach. There is no finer witness to 'udaiyar enappaduvadhu ookkam'.
