Explanation

Generosity is a quality very much honoured in Tamil tradition. We still remember the seven great givers, the kadai ezhu vallal, as models of it. But to give, one must first have something. For that, the ability to earn is needed. For that ability, ookkam is needed. So Valluvar says that one without ookkam cannot even take pride in being a giver.

In the phrase 'valliyam ennum serukku', 'serukku' is here no evil vanity but a good pride, the satisfaction of feeling that one gives to others and helps them. That satisfaction comes only to one with ookkam. The idle man lives on what others have given; he never reaches the position of giving. So the high joy of generosity is denied him.

There is another subtle sense. Generosity is giving not by wealth alone but by time, knowledge, love and labour. These too can be given only by one with ookkam. In a tired mind the eagerness to give does not even rise.

Many people today have the thought of giving back to society. The first step needed is to rise, work and create a standing for ourselves. After that the pride of helping others comes by itself. This verse is a call of generosity that wakes us from sloth.

A story

King Shibi

This tale is honoured in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata and in Tamil tradition. King Shibi ruled with unfailing dharma. To protect those who sought refuge was his vow. Indra and Agni wished to test his dharma. Indra took the form of a hawk and Agni the form of a dove.

One day, as Shibi sat in his court, a dove, trembling in fear, fell into his lap. 'King, save me,' it begged. In the next moment the hawk flew in and said, 'King, that dove is my food; give it to me.'

Shibi refused. 'To abandon one who has sought refuge is not dharma,' he said. The hawk argued, 'If you protect it, I shall die of hunger. What is food for my hunger? What dharma are you doing?' Shibi thought. A way was needed to save both lives. 'Take flesh from my body equal to the dove,' he said.

A balance was brought. In one pan was the dove; in the other Shibi cut flesh from his thigh and placed it. But however much flesh he put, the dove's pan stayed lower. In the end Shibi himself climbed fully into the scale pan and sat. His resolve did not waver, and joy was on his face.

At that moment Indra and Agni appeared in their true forms and praised his dharma. His wounds vanished. His fame spread through the world. In Tamil tradition the tale is joined to the line of Chola kings under the name Shibi Chola.

What he gave was not gold or goods but his own body. Behind such lofty generosity lay 'ullam udaimai', boundless firmness of heart. The pride of giving is born from the drive of the heart.
