Explanation

When a man in power is our relative or younger than we are, we may naturally tend to treat him casually. The thought 'he is our younger brother', 'he is our brother-in-law', 'he was a boy of ours till yesterday' reduces respect. Valluvar points this out and warns. The reason is that a king is not merely a private person; he bears the authority of the country. The respect given to his seat is due not to him but to the seat.

The phrase 'the glory that stands' is beautiful. The idea is that the greatness, responsibility and power of the royal office stand around him as a radiance. Even if he is young, before that radiance we must bow. Some take it to mean a divine element. In any case, the meaning is that the dignity of the office should not be diminished by the family relationship.

In family-run institutions today this often occurs. When a younger relative becomes head of a family business, if the elders belittle him as one who came only yesterday, the institution is damaged. It is civil to honour his responsibility by the office and not by his age. At the same time, if there is a fault, one still has the right to advise in the proper manner.

A story

Akrura Recognises Krishna

From the Bhagavata Purana. Kamsa, the tyrant king of Mathura, plotted to call Krishna and Balarama to his arena and kill them. To bring them he sent Akrura to Gokula. Akrura belonged to the Yadava clan and was a relative of Krishna. In years Krishna was a boy; to onlookers he appeared a cowherd child.

All along the way Akrura's heart melted in thought of Krishna. He was happy that he was going to see him. In Gokula, the moment he saw Krishna he leapt from the chariot and fell at his feet in worship. He did not think of him as younger or lower in kinship. He conducted himself as one who had sensed the divine radiance in Krishna.

On the way toward Mathura, while bathing in the river Yamuna, Akrura saw a vision in the water. There he saw Maha Vishnu reclining on Adisesha in the ocean of milk. When he rose and looked, Krishna was sitting in the chariot. His inner feeling became certain: this was no ordinary cowherd boy but the Supreme itself, the Bhagavata says.

From that day Akrura lived with love and humility toward Krishna. Because he saw his greatness beyond the veil of age and relation, grace came to him. Tradition says he also became a trusted friend of Krishna.

Ordinarily we tend to see a relative merely as 'one of us'. But Akrura honoured the position and greatness. This is what Valluvar says: without belittling him as young or a kinsman, one should honour the glory that stands in him.
