Explanation

This is another side of the previous verse. There the thought 'we have gained trust' was warned against; here the thought 'we are old acquaintances' is warned against. One who has associated with the king for many years, who was a childhood friend, or a relative, may think himself exempt. Boldened by the thought 'he will do nothing to me; how many days have we known each other', they dare to do improper things.

'Intimacy' denotes a very close, familiar right of acquaintance. It is the beauty of friendship, but if that familiarity is used to do what is improper it brings ruin. Valluvar here does not condemn friendship or acquaintance, only the overstepping of it. However much familiarity there is, acting against a person's self-respect or the dignity of his office wins only his dislike.

In life today, examples are a close friend who becomes a leader and is treated improperly in the name of the old friendship, or an official who breaks rules by relying on kinship. For friendship to last, both sides must respect limits. The affection of long acquaintance does not give protection; good conduct does. The verse stresses that good conduct is a stronger protection than familiarity. Old friendship may protect us once, but the power to keep protecting us belongs to our behaviour. Those who understand this keep long relationships easily.

A story

The Last Day of Shishupala

From the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata. When Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya sacrifice, the question arose of whom among the visiting kings to honour first. Bhishma proposed Krishna. Shishupala, the king of Chedi, would not accept it. He was Krishna's relative, the son of Krishna's aunt Shrutashrava.

Shishupala and Krishna had an old connection. Tradition says that at his birth Shishupala had three eyes and four arms, and a voice from heaven declared that his abnormalities would vanish on the lap of a certain person, and that this same person would be his destroyer. When the child was placed on Krishna's lap the deformities disappeared. So Shrutashrava asked Krishna for a boon that he should forgive a hundred of her son's faults. Krishna agreed.

That old relationship gave Shishupala arrogance. Emboldened with the thought 'You are my relative; what can you do to me?', he began to insult Krishna in the assembly. In front of the elders he reviled him with harsh abuses. Krishna kept calm and patient. He did nothing until Shishupala had committed a hundred offences.

When the hundred-and-first insult came, the Mahabharata says that Krishna severed his head with his discus. It is also said that Shishupala's radiance merged into Krishna. By using the right of kinship in an improper way, he brought on his own end.

This is also a lesson for our relationships. Old familiarity gives a right, but the right has a limit. If one oversteps and acts without good conduct, when the limit of patience ends, ruin comes.

To reflect on

Have you ever, in the name of old familiarity, behaved improperly with someone very close to you?
