Explanation

Commentators explain this couplet in several ways. 'Thaar' is the vanguard of the army, that is, the first line of soldiers. That line must bear the first assault of the enemy and make a way for those behind. The sense is that the excellence of an army lies in knowing the strength needed to withstand the battle that has come, and marching in formation accordingly.

When an army marches, not all are of the same kind. Those in front must be strong; there must be divisions, those who support in the middle and those who guard the rear. The order of an army is that each one knows his place and his duty.

'Thaar' also means a garland, and some explain it through the garland warriors wear. Most, however, take it as the vanguard. In both senses the sense is one: an army must have the ability to stand up to the weight of battle.

In practice, when trouble comes to an organisation we must strengthen those who meet it first. Those who know the scale of the coming challenge and prepare accordingly will win. Some divide the couplet differently, taking 'thaar thaangi selvadhu' as soldiers marching wearing garlands, resolved on victory. In any case there is no disagreement that the army's wisdom lies in knowing beforehand the nature of the battle to be met and sharing the burden accordingly. An advance without knowledge ends in defeat.

A story

The Array of the Pandava Army

The Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata describes in detail how the armies were arrayed before the Kurukshetra war began. On the Kaurava side Bhishma was supreme commander. On the Pandava side Dhrishtadyumna, son of Drupada, was appointed commander. Yudhishthira ordered him and Arjuna to array the army.

On the first day the Kaurava army under Bhishma was arrayed like a great sea. Yudhishthira, citing the teaching of Brihaspati, told Arjuna that when a small force faces a larger one it should form the vajra formation. Arjuna formed a formation like the thunderbolt. Bhima stood in the front, and the ranks of warriors were arranged around him.

The next day Dhrishtadyumna arrayed the army in the krauncha formation, in the shape of a heron. Arjuna stood at its head, and divisions stood like wings on both sides. A place was marked for every charioteer, for the foot soldiers and for the elephants.

In this arrangement those in front were chosen as men strong enough to bear the enemy's first assault. Those behind stood as their support and guard. The army was arrayed after knowing the strength of the battle coming upon it.

This story illustrates the couplet 'an army is that which advances bearing its vanguard.' An army is not a crowd; it is an order in which front and rear each know their place. An army arrayed after knowing the measure of the battle it faces is the one that endures.
