The Excellence of an Army

Pataimaatchi

This chapter describes the qualities of an excellent army. A complete, fearless, unbeaten and united force with valour, honour and trustworthiness is the chief of a king's wealth. But however many soldiers there are, Valluvar says, without good leaders there is no army.

Introduction

Pataimaatchi, the excellence of the army, is the first chapter of the section on the army. So far the limbs of the state, the king, ministers, land, fort and wealth, have been described. Now he speaks of the army that guards them. An army is not only for fighting; it is the basis of the country's peace and safety. With a good army, war itself may become unnecessary, since enemies will fear and keep quiet. This idea is seen throughout the chapter.

The first couplet calls the army the chief of a king's wealth. A complete army that does not fear wounds and wins victories is a king's first treasure. The next says that courage that does not shrink at times of distress is possible only for a veteran army. The third lessens the worth of a noisy crowd: a host of rats roaring like the sea is destroyed by a mere breath of a cobra.

The fourth and fifth couplets describe the nature of an army: one that has not known defeat, cannot be bought, and has valour inherited through tradition; one that, even if Yama himself comes in rage, can stand together. The sixth says that four things, valour, honour, good paths and trust, are the protection of an army. The seventh speaks of the army that bears the enemy's vanguard and goes on.

The eighth says that even if strength is lacking, an army can gain regard by its appearance. The ninth says that if meanness, bitterness and poverty are absent, the army wins. The last couplet concludes that however many soldiers there are, without leaders there is no army. Thus Valluvar's conclusion is that character and leadership, rather than numbers, are the life of an army.

Even today the chapter applies to anyone leading a team or an organisation. We can substitute employees for soldiers, a manager for the commander and challenges for war. With discipline, trust, good leadership and fair pay, any team will win. This simple truth is what Valluvar tells us. Seen this way, the chapter offers lessons for any team today. Kural 769 and others also attend to the soldier's welfare.

Chapter story

Rama's Vanara Army

The Kishkindha Kanda and the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana tell of the making and working of the vanara army. To rescue Sita, Rama had to march an army to Lanka. He did not have Ayodhya's army. His help was the vanaras and bears who lived in the forest. They were not a formal army, yet Rama's leadership and their love turned them into one.

Sugriva was king of that army. Angada, Jambavan, Nila, Nala and Hanuman were its commanders. Each knew his part. Nala knew the art of building and took charge of making a bridge across the sea. Valmiki says the vanaras uprooted mountains and threw trees and rocks into the sea to make the bridge. Their co-operation let the bridge be finished in five days.

When they crossed the sea and reached Lanka, the army was arrayed in order. Rama appointed a leader for each division. In the midst of the army he moved with affection. When Ravana sent spies to learn the strength of the vanara army, tradition says Rama forgave them, released them and let them see the army's glory.

When the war began the vanara army stood fearlessly. They clashed without fear against Indrajit's magical arrows and against Kumbhakarna's colossal form. Hanuman brought the Sanjivani mountain and revived the fallen. The reason for their firmness was the faith they placed in Rama.

This story shows many qualities of the army Valluvar describes: excellence of leadership, united action, valour, honour and trust. They had no pay, but they had duty and love. They had no meanness or bitterness. For this the smaller vanara army defeated Ravana's great army.

In the end the vanara army came as far as Ayodhya and took part in Rama's coronation. Rama thanked each one and gave gifts. This affection shows that only when a leader honours his army does the army honour the leader. This is the life of the excellence of an army.

Several causes of the vanaras' success may be seen. Sugriva gathered the army and sent it in order to the four directions; Hanuman's wisdom and strength, Jambavan's counsel born of experience, Angada's youthful daring, Nala's skill in building, and Nila's command all joined together. Each knew his own ability and took up a fitting task. This is the true form of what the couplet calls completeness of limbs. Moreover, the love and respect Rama showed to his army grew the vanaras' trust. An army lives only when the leader stands with the soldiers, knows their sorrow and remembers with gratitude even their small help.
