Way of Accumulating Wealth

This chapter speaks of the importance of earning wealth by righteous means. Wealth gives standing and light, yields dharma and joy, but wealth that comes without compassion and love should be set aside. Valluvar calls wealth the nurse of compassion and the sharpest weapon against the pride of foes.

Introduction

Porul Seyalvagai, the first chapter of the section Koozhiyal, speaks of wealth. After the state, the land and the fort have been set up, what is needed to run them is wealth. A state without wealth cannot maintain army and fort, and a family without wealth cannot bring up children. So Valluvar places wealth in a high position.

The first three couplets state the power of wealth plainly. Wealth has the power to make those of no importance important. It is the way of the world that all scorn the poor and honour the rich. Wealth is a lamp that never fails, a light that dispels darkness in any land one cares to think of. Thus Valluvar states the truth of the world without hesitation.

But the next couplets bring a warning about the manner of gaining it. Wealth that comes without evil yields dharma and joy. Wealth that does not come with compassion and love should be left unembraced. In this way he stresses that dharma is the base of wealth. The rule of the chapter is that wealth is needed, but not by any means.

The sixth couplet lists the sources of wealth proper to a king: unclaimed property, customs duty and tribute taken from enemies. The seventh calls wealth the nurse that rears compassion. Compassion born of love needs the nurse called wealth, he hints. The eighth says that with wealth in hand, undertaking an action is like watching an elephant fight from a hilltop. The ninth calls wealth the weapon that cuts the pride of foes. The tenth says that one who has gathered bright wealth readily gains the other two ends, dharma and pleasure.

The chapter is practical even today. It is plain that in poverty a person cannot protect dignity and health. At the same time wealth that strays from the path through greed brings a person down. The middle path Valluvar shows is to respect wealth and let dharma and compassion guide it. This is the meaning of the name Porul Seyalvagai: the manner of making wealth. The section Koozhiyal deals with the economy, and the word 'koozh' means both food and wealth.

Chapter story

Lakshmi from the Ocean of Milk

The Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana tell the story of the churning of the ocean of milk, the Amrita Manthana. Once, when Indra, king of the gods, was riding Airavata the elephant, the sage Durvasa gave him a garland of flowers as a gift. Indra, in pride, placed it on the elephant's forehead, and the elephant trampled and flung it down. Seeing it, the sage grew angry and cursed, 'You who disrespect in the pride of wealth shall lose all your wealth.'

By that curse the grace of Lakshmi lessened in the three worlds. The gods lost strength and the asuras defeated them. To recover their lost wealth and strength the gods went to Vishnu. Vishnu showed them a way: they should join peacefully with the asuras, churn the ocean of milk and obtain nectar.

Mount Mandara became the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki the rope. The gods held one side and the asuras the other, and churned. When the mountain sank into the sea, Vishnu appeared as a tortoise and supported it, says the Purana. The churning lasted many days. First the deadly Halahala poison rose, and Shiva drank it and saved the world.

Then many treasures, such as Kamadhenu, Airavata and the Parijata tree, arose. At last Lakshmi, seated on a lotus, rose from the ocean of milk. She looked at the gods and asuras and chose with whom to dwell. Tradition says she took her place on Vishnu's chest, and that she stays with those of patience and dharma.

After Lakshmi, Dhanvantari appeared with the nectar. The asuras and gods clashed over sharing it; Vishnu came as Mohini and distributed the nectar to the gods. The gods regained their lost strength and wealth.

The story teaches several truths about wealth. Indra's pride made wealth depart; effort without arrogance and unity brought it back. Like the churning, wealth comes by long, patient labour, and one must bear obstacles like the poison that arises midway.

The belief that Lakshmi stays with the righteous joins Valluvar's idea of wealth that comes 'without evil'. Wealth is needed, but pride and wrong paths drive it away. Effort, unity and humility are the way to earn and keep wealth, and that is the essence of this story.

A few more points may be considered in this story. In churning the ocean the gods and the asuras worked together; despite their enmity, a common aim joined them. This shows how large is the place of co-operation in earning wealth. Not individuals alone but society and the state earn wealth by joint effort.
